Last month, a group of four friends from Rohini walked into our Pitampura office, sunburnt from a weekend in Jaipur and already bored of planning. “We want beaches, street food and one proper temple,” one of them said. “But everyone online says something different. Where do we even start?”
We hear this a lot. Thailand is generous, and that is exactly why first-timers feel stuck. There are so many islands, cities and markets that choosing feels harder than packing. This guide is how we answer that question at our desk. We have organised the top 21 tourist places in Thailand by region, with practical tips on timing, crowds and common mistakes, so our first trip feels easy and not rushed.
Why Thailand Keeps Winning Indian Travellers
Thailand saw about 2.48 million Indian tourists last year, up around 16 per cent, while the country’s overall visitor numbers actually fell. India was Thailand’s third-largest source market, after Malaysia and China.
What does this mean for us? Thailand is clearly a favourite, so flights and hotels in peak months do fill up. It also means more direct routes, more Indian-friendly restaurants and tour operators who know what we like. The country’s tourism authority has also been targeting families, millennials, weddings, golfers, luxury travellers, seniors and adventure seekers, so there is truly something for every kind of trip.
Important Visa Update for Indian Travellers
Visa rules for Indians have changed several times this year, so please read this carefully. From mid-September, Indian ordinary passport holders can enter Thailand without a visa for tourism, for stays of up to 30 days. Travellers should complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within 72 hours before arrival. The Indian Embassy in Bangkok has also advised carrying at least THB 20,000 in cash per person, along with a passport valid for six months, a confirmed return ticket and hotel bookings.
Because rules have shifted before, we always re-verify the latest requirements before every booking. Our visa requirements page is a good starting point.
Best Time to Visit Thailand
- November to February: Cool, dry and busy. The best weather for beaches and city sightseeing.
- March to May: Hot and humid. Beaches are still lovely, but the afternoons need shade and water.
- June to October: Monsoon. Fewer crowds and lower prices, but the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Similan) can have rough seas.
- Koh Samui note: Samui is on the Gulf side, so its wet season comes later, roughly October to December.
Bangkok Tourist Places

1. Grand Palace Bangkok and Wat Phra Kaew
The Grand Palace has been the ceremonial heart of the Thai monarchy since the late 1700s. Inside, Wat Phra Kaew houses the revered Emerald Buddha. The gold spires, murals and detailed tilework are overwhelming in the best way.
- Best for: First-timers, culture lovers, families
- Time needed: 3 hours
- Our tip: Cover shoulders and knees, as the dress code is strictly enforced. Go at opening time, and ignore any stranger who says the palace is “closed today” and offers a tuk-tuk tour. That is a common scam.
2. Wat Pho
Famous for its giant gold reclining Buddha, Wat Pho is also considered the birthplace of traditional Thai massage. The grounds are peaceful, with beautiful stupas and courtyards.
- Best for: Culture lovers, seniors, couples
- Time needed: 1.5 to 2 hours
- Our tip: Combine it with the Grand Palace, since the two are close. Finish with a traditional massage at the temple’s own school.
3. Wat Arun Bangkok
The Temple of Dawn rises beside the Chao Phraya River, decorated with colourful porcelain pieces. It is one of the most photographed landmarks in Bangkok.
- Best for: Photographers, couples, families
- Time needed: 1 to 1.5 hours
- Our tip: Take the short river ferry across. The steps up the tower are steep, so wear flat shoes. Sunset views from across the river are lovely.
4. Chatuchak Weekend Market
This is one of the world’s largest weekend markets, with thousands of stalls selling clothes, home decor, plants, street food and souvenirs.
- Best for: Shoppers, friends, families
- Time needed: 3 to 4 hours
- Our tip: Visit early, carry water and keep valuables secure. Bargain politely. Check opening days, as it mainly runs on weekends.
5. Chao Phraya River Cruise
An evening cruise glides past lit-up temples and skyline views, often with a buffet dinner and live music.
- Best for: Couples, families, groups
- Time needed: 2 hours
- Our tip: Book a dinner cruise at sunset so we see the city in both daylight and night lights. Confirm vegetarian options in advance.
Day Trip from Bangkok
6. Ayutthaya Historical Park
Once the capital of the Siamese kingdom, Ayutthaya is now a UNESCO-listed park of ruined temples and giant Buddha statues. The famous Buddha head wrapped in tree roots is here. It is roughly a 90-minute drive from Bangkok.
- Best for: History lovers, photographers, families with older children
- Time needed: Full day
- Our tip: Start early to avoid the heat, and hire a tuk-tuk or bicycle to cover the ruins. Dress modestly at active temples.
Pattaya Tourist Places

7. Coral Island (Koh Larn)
A short boat ride from Pattaya brings us to clear water, sandy beaches and plenty of water sports like parasailing and banana boats.
- Best for: Families, friends, beach lovers
- Time needed: Half to full day
- Our tip: Go on a weekday for smaller crowds. Use licensed operators and always wear a life jacket.
8. Sanctuary of Truth
A towering wooden temple covered in detailed carvings of mythology and philosophy. It is still being built, which makes it feel alive and unusual.
- Best for: Culture lovers, photographers, couples
- Time needed: 1.5 to 2 hours
- Our tip: Safety helmets are required inside, and guided tours add a lot of meaning. Wear comfortable shoes.
9. Nong Nooch Tropical Garden
A large botanical garden with themed gardens, cultural shows and animal displays. It is relaxed, shaded in parts and a favourite with families.
- Best for: Families, seniors
- Time needed: 3 to 4 hours
- Our tip: Visit in the morning, wear a hat and carry water, as the grounds are wide.
Phuket Tourist Attractions

10. Phuket Big Buddha
A huge white marble Buddha sits on a hilltop with sweeping views of the island, bays and the sea.
- Best for: Couples, seniors, families
- Time needed: 1 to 1.5 hours
- Our tip: Dress modestly. Visit late afternoon for softer light and cooler air.
11. Old Phuket Town
Colourful Sino-Portuguese shophouses, small cafés and street art make this a relaxed contrast to the beaches. The Sunday Walking Street market is a local favourite.
- Best for: Couples, friends, food lovers
- Time needed: 2 to 3 hours
- Our tip: Plan a Sunday evening if possible. Wear light shoes, as lanes are narrow.
12. Patong Beach
Phuket’s busiest beach has water sports, restaurants, shopping and nightlife on Bangla Road.
- Best for: Friends, young travellers, nightlife seekers
- Time needed: Half a day
- Our tip: Obey red flags, because currents can be strong in monsoon months. Agree prices before using jet skis to avoid disputes.
13. Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island Thailand
Limestone cliffs rise from emerald water, and the famous needle-shaped rock at Khao Phing Kan became widely known through a classic spy film. Tours usually include canoeing through sea caves and visiting floating villages.
- Best for: Adventure seekers, families, photographers
- Time needed: Full day
- Our tip: Choose an early departure to beat the midday crowds. Check weather and sea conditions before booking.
Krabi Tourist Attractions

14. Railay Beach Krabi
Railay is reached only by boat, with no roads, which gives it a calm, tucked-away feeling. Towering cliffs, caves and Phra Nang Beach make it a favourite for rock climbing and scenic walks.
- Best for: Adventure seekers, honeymooners
- Time needed: Full day or overnight
- Our tip: Boats stop in rough seas, so keep schedule flexibility. Pack light and wear water-friendly shoes.
15. Phi Phi Islands Thailand and Maya Bay Thailand
The Phi Phi Islands are known for sheer cliffs, blue lagoons and snorkelling spots. Maya Bay, on Phi Phi Leh, is the famous cove from a well-known film. To protect the ecosystem, access is managed, swimming in the bay is restricted, and the bay can close seasonally.
- Best for: Families, friends, snorkelers
- Time needed: Full day
- Our tip: Pick an early departure for fewer boats. Confirm Maya Bay’s open status before booking, and use reef-safe sunscreen.
16. Hong Islands
A group of small islands near Krabi with a hidden lagoon, white sand and clear water. Kayaking here is a quiet highlight.
- Best for: Couples, nature lovers
- Time needed: Half to full day
- Our tip: Choose a smaller-group tour for a calmer experience. A national park fee may apply on arrival.
Koh Samui Places to Visit

17. Koh Samui
Samui offers beaches like Chaweng and Lamai, the Big Buddha temple and a lively night market scene. A day trip to Ang Thong Marine National Park adds kayaking and island viewpoints.
- Best for: Honeymooners, families, luxury travellers
- Time needed: 3 to 4 days
- Our tip: Samui’s weather pattern differs from Phuket’s, so it can be a good alternative when the Andaman side is rainy. Check the season before booking.
Northern Thailand

18. Chiang Mai Old City and Doi Suthep
Chiang Mai’s walled old city is full of temples, cafés and craft shops. On the hill above, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep has a golden spire and sweeping views after a climb of stairs.
- Best for: Culture lovers, couples, slow travellers
- Time needed: 2 to 3 days
- Our tip: Visit Doi Suthep in the early morning for cooler weather. Cooking classes and night markets are lovely evening plans.
19. Ethical Elephant Sanctuary, Chiang Mai
Several sanctuaries around Chiang Mai let visitors observe, feed and walk alongside rescued elephants. The experience can be moving, but standards vary a lot.
- Best for: Families, animal lovers
- Time needed: Half to full day
- Our tip: Please choose a place that does not offer riding, shows or chained displays. We help check sanctuary practices before we book.
20. Chiang Rai Attractions: White Temple
Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, is a modern artistic temple covered in white plaster and mirror pieces, with surreal details. The nearby Blue Temple is just as eye-catching.
- Best for: Photographers, culture lovers
- Time needed: Full day from Chiang Mai
- Our tip: The drive is long, so we suggest an overnight stay in Chiang Rai. Dress modestly.
Andaman Sea Adventure

21. Similan Islands Thailand
Granite boulders, white sand and clear water make the Similan Islands one of Thailand’s best diving and snorkelling areas. The marine park is typically open only during the dry season, roughly mid-October to mid-May, and is reached by speedboat from the Khao Lak area.
- Best for: Divers, snorkelers, adventure seekers
- Time needed: Full day
- Our tip: Book early because daily visitor numbers are limited. Confirm the season and sea conditions before booking.

- Day 5 to 6: Phuket: Big Buddha, Old Town and Phang Nga Bay.
- Day 7: Krabi: Railay Beach or Hong Islands.
