Top 21 Places to Visit in Dubai: Must-See Attractions and Things to Do

Dubai - Winter outdoor attractions, desert safaris, and beach

A few months ago, a couple from Rohini sat in our Pitampura office with a phone full of screenshots. Burj Khalifa, desert dunes, a golden souk, a snowy ski slope inside a mall. “We have five days,” the husband said. “How do we fit it all in without running around like we are late for a flight?”

We smiled, because we hear this every season. Dubai is a city where everything looks unmissable, and that is exactly the problem. This Dubai travel guide is how we answer that question at our desk. We have grouped the 21 best places to visit in Dubai by mood, and for each one we share what it is, why it matters, how long to give it and what we tell our own travellers before they go.

Why Dubai Keeps Calling Us Back

Dubai welcomed 19.59 million international overnight visitors last year, a 5 per cent rise on the year before and the third successive record. South Asia contributed about 2.89 million of those visitors, roughly 15 per cent of arrivals.

What does this mean for us? Dubai tourist attractions are busy, but the city is expanding to match demand. Hotel inventory has crossed 154,000 rooms and average occupancy was 80.7 per cent last year, so good hotels do fill up during peak weeks. Dubai International has also remained the world’s busiest airport for international passengers for eleven years running, which is why flights from Delhi are frequent.

Dubai has been listed among the top 10 safest cities in a global safety index and named a leading city for solo female travellers, which gives many of us extra peace of mind with parents, children or solo trips. Planned upgrades include an expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport and the Dubai Metro Blue Line, so getting around should keep getting easier.

When Is the Best Time for Dubai Sightseeing?

October to April is our favourite window. Daytime heat eases, outdoor attractions are comfortable, and seasonal favourites like Global Village and Miracle Garden reopen. We are in that window right now, so it is a good moment to plan the winter holidays.

Landmarks We Do Not Skip

1. Burj Khalifa

At 828 metres, Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world, and standing at its base is humbling before we even go up. Visitors ride a fast elevator to the observation decks, with the lower decks around the 124th and 125th floors and a higher deck at the 148th. From up there, the desert, the coast and the Dubai skyline spread out in every direction.

  • Best for: First-timers, couples, photographers
  • Time needed: About 1.5 to 2 hours including queues
  • Our tip: Book a sunset slot in advance. We see the city change from daylight to night lights in one visit, but these slots sell out in peak weeks.

2. The Dubai Mall and Dubai Fountain

The Dubai Mall is far more than shopping. It holds an aquarium, an ice rink, hundreds of shops and a huge food court area. Outside, the Dubai Fountain performs choreographed water and music shows in the evenings, usually every half hour, and watching from the waterfront promenade is free.

  • Best for: Families, shoppers, evening plans
  • Time needed: 3 to 4 hours, longer if shopping
  • Our tip: Eat early, then walk out for the fountain show right after dark. The mall is large, so we fix a meeting point in case anyone gets separated.

3. Palm Jumeirah

This man-made island, shaped like a palm tree, is one of Dubai’s best-known engineering feats. It is home to the Atlantis resort, beach clubs, luxury hotels and a monorail running along the trunk. For a full view of the palm shape, an observation deck on the 52nd floor of Palm Tower works well.

  • Best for: Honeymooners, families, luxury seekers
  • Time needed: Half a day
  • Our tip: Visit the viewing deck first to understand the layout, then head to Atlantis or a beach in the afternoon.

4. Burj Al Arab and Jumeirah Beach

The sail-shaped Burj Al Arab stands on its own artificial island and is probably the most photographed hotel in the world. Access inside is generally limited to hotel guests and restaurant bookings, so most visitors admire it from the public beach nearby. Kite Beach and Jumeirah Public Beach are popular for the view.

  • Best for: Photos, relaxed beach time
  • Time needed: 1 to 2 hours
  • Our tip: Go in the late afternoon when the light is soft. If we want to see the interior, we reserve a table well ahead.

5. Dubai Frame

Standing about 150 metres tall in Zabeel Park, the Dubai Frame is a giant picture frame. One side looks towards Old Dubai, the other towards the modern skyline, and a glass-floor bridge links the two sides at the top. It tells the story of the city in one glance.

  • Best for: Families, history and photo lovers
  • Time needed: About 1 hour
  • Our tip: Combine it with a walk in Zabeel Park, and avoid very late afternoon if we want fewer crowds at the glass bridge.

6. Museum of the Future

Opened in 2022, this ring-shaped building is covered in Arabic calligraphy and has no pillars on the inside. Exhibits explore technology, space, health and sustainability in a hands-on way. It is one of the most visually striking Dubai sightseeing places.

  • Best for: Teens, tech lovers, couples
  • Time needed: 2 to 3 hours
  • Our tip: Tickets are time-slotted, so we book ahead. The building also looks wonderful lit up at night.

Old Dubai and Culture

7. Al Fahidi Historic District

Also known as Al Bastakiya, this is one of the oldest preserved neighbourhoods in Dubai. Sand-coloured houses with wind towers, narrow lanes, small galleries and courtyard cafés show us how the city looked before the skyscrapers.

  • Best for: Culture lovers, slow travellers
  • Time needed: 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Our tip: Visit in the morning or late afternoon, wear comfortable shoes and stay on for tea in a courtyard café.

8. Dubai Creek and the Abra Ride

The Creek is where Dubai began as a trading port. Crossing it on a traditional wooden abra between Bur Dubai and Deira costs only a very small fare and takes a few minutes, but it feels like stepping back in time.

  • Best for: Budget-friendly experiences, curious travellers
  • Time needed: 30 to 60 minutes
  • Our tip: Carry small change for the fare and cross at sunset for the best light.

9. Gold Souk and Spice Souk

Located in Deira, these two traditional markets sit close together. The Gold Souk is lined with glittering shop windows, while the Spice Souk smells of saffron, cardamom and dried lime. Bargaining is part of the experience.

  • Best for: Shoppers, families, food lovers
  • Time needed: 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Our tip: Ask for an itemised bill, compare prices across a few shops, and check India’s customs rules on gold allowances before buying so there are no surprises on return.

10. Jumeirah Mosque

This is one of the few mosques in Dubai that welcomes non-Muslim visitors through guided tours, which explain Islamic customs, prayer and architecture in a respectful, open way. Its carved stonework looks particularly beautiful in the morning light.

  • Best for: Culture seekers, first-time visitors to the Gulf
  • Time needed: About 1 hour
  • Our tip: Tours run on select mornings, so we check timings first. Modest dress is required, with shoulders and knees covered.

11. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi

Most of our travellers add this as a day trip from Dubai, roughly a 90-minute drive each way. White marble domes, hundreds of columns, reflective pools and one of the world’s largest hand-knotted carpets make it a calm, memorable stop.

  • Best for: Families, photographers, culture lovers
  • Time needed: Full day including the drive
  • Our tip: Visiting hours can vary, especially on Fridays, so we confirm before setting off. Women should cover their hair, and loose, modest clothing is needed for everyone.

Family Fun Spots

12. Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo

Inside the Dubai Mall, a giant tank holds sharks, rays and thousands of fish, with a walk-through tunnel that makes us feel like we are on the seabed. The underwater zoo upstairs adds penguins, crocodiles and other animals.

  • Best for: Young children, grandparents, rainy days
  • Time needed: 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Our tip: Visit before the evening rush so kids can enjoy the tunnel without crowds.

13. Ski Dubai

Inside Mall of the Emirates, Ski Dubai is an indoor ski resort kept below freezing, with slopes, a snow park and penguin encounters. For many of our travellers, it is the first time children play in real snow.

  • Best for: Families, friends, snow-first-timers
  • Time needed: 2 to 3 hours
  • Our tip: Warm jackets and gloves are usually provided, but we carry socks. Check age and height rules for specific activities.

14. IMG Worlds of Adventure

One of the world’s largest indoor theme parks, with themed zones, rides and character shows. Because it is air-conditioned, it is a lifesaver on hot days and a good plan B when the weather is not ideal.

  • Best for: Children, teenagers, families
  • Time needed: 4 to 6 hours
  • Our tip: Arrive at opening, ride the popular attractions first and break for lunch before the afternoon rush.

15. Dubai Miracle Garden

This seasonal garden turns millions of flowers into arches, clocks, towers and giant sculptures. It generally reopens in the cooler months and closes for summer.

  • Best for: Couples, families, photographers
  • Time needed: 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Our tip: Go late afternoon for softer light and cooler air. Confirm the season dates before planning.

16. Global Village

Open in the cooler months, Global Village is a large seasonal festival with pavilions representing dozens of countries, street food, shopping, live shows and rides. There is usually a pavilion for Indian travellers who want familiar food and crafts.

  • Best for: Families, groups, shoppers
  • Time needed: 3 to 4 hours
  • Our tip: Go on a weekday evening for lighter crowds, and carry a little cash for small stalls.

Adventure Spots

17. Desert Safari

A desert safari is the experience our travellers talk about most. Most tours include dune bashing in a 4×4, camel rides, sandboarding and a camp dinner with live entertainment after sunset. Many operators work inside the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve.

  • Best for: Families, friends, adventure seekers
  • Time needed: 5 to 6 hours, evening or morning
  • Our tip: Dune bashing can be rough, so travellers with back or heart conditions, pregnant women and small children should talk to the operator first. We also suggest carrying a scarf for sand and sunglasses.

18. Hatta

About 90 minutes from the city, Hatta sits in the Hajar mountains. We find rocky trails, a heritage village, a dam with kayaking and a calm, small-town feeling that is a nice break from skyscrapers.

  • Best for: Nature lovers, couples, active families
  • Time needed: Full day
  • Our tip: Start early, carry water and sun protection, and check kayak and activity timings before heading out.

19. Aquaventure Waterpark

Part of the Atlantis resort on Palm Jumeirah, this waterpark has high-speed slides, a lazy river and a famous slide that runs through a shark-filled lagoon. It is aimed at older children, teens and adults.

  • Best for: Teens, young groups, thrill seekers
  • Time needed: 5 to 6 hours
  • Our tip: Height and age limits apply to many slides. Apply sunscreen, wear a cap and keep valuables in a locker.

Romantic Evenings

20. Dhow Dinner Cruise

A dhow is a traditional wooden boat, and a dinner cruise glides past lit-up buildings while we dine. Cruises usually last around two hours and run on either Dubai Creek or Dubai Marina. The Creek shows the older city, while the Marina shows towering glass buildings.

  • Best for: Couples, anniversaries, family dinners
  • Time needed: About 2 hours
  • Our tip: Choose the Creek for a quieter, heritage feel and the Marina for a glittering skyline. Vegetarian options are usually available, but we confirm in advance.

21. Dubai Marina and JBR

The Marina is a man-made canal lined with towers, restaurants and a long waterfront walk. Next to it, JBR has a beach promenade with cafés, shops and street performers. It is the easiest place to end a long sightseeing day, with Metro and tram links nearby.

  • Best for: Couples, friends, relaxed evenings
  • Time needed: 2 to 3 hours
  • Our tip: Walk the Marina at sunset, then cross to JBR for dinner. It is lively on weekends, so we book restaurants early.
