A family from Janakpuri sat across from us last winter with one very specific wish. “We want snow in December,” the mother said, “but Europe is too expensive and Switzerland is too far. Is there somewhere closer that still feels like a proper holiday?”
We smiled and pulled out a photo of Almaty’s snowy mountains. A few weeks later, the family was riding a gondola above pine forests with a four-hour flight behind them. That is the thing about Kazakhstan: it surprises us. It is big, it is varied and it is far easier to reach than most of us expect.
This Kazakhstan travel guide covers the top 21 tourist places in Kazakhstan, starting with Almaty, then moving to its lakes and canyons, the capital Astana, and a few wilder corners for second trips. For each place we share timing, practical tips and what we tell our own travellers before they go.
Why Kazakhstan Is Growing on Indian Travellers
Kazakhstan welcomed a record 15.7 million foreign visitors last year, of whom 11.1 million travelled for tourism. Indian arrivals are climbing too. Indian estimates put last year’s visitors from India at around 250,000, while a Kazakh official quoted a figure of around 150,000. Either way, the trend is clear. About 86,000 Indian visitors reached Almaty in just the first three quarters of last year.
What does this mean for us? Kazakhstan is no longer a hidden gem, but it is not crowded either. Hotels, guides and tour operators are getting used to Indian travellers, while the landscapes still feel fresh and uncrowded.
Kazakhstan Visa for Indians
Indian passport holders can enter Kazakhstan visa-free for up to 14 days per visit, capped at 42 days within any 180-day period. For longer stays, a tourist e-Visa is available online, with a fee of around USD 60. The e-Visa works only for arrival and departure through Almaty and Astana airports, not land borders.
Rules have changed before and some sources quote different stay limits, so we re-verify the latest requirements for every booking. Our visa requirements page is a good starting point.
Best Time to Visit Kazakhstan
- May to September: Warm weather, green valleys and the best time for lakes, canyons and hiking.
- September to October: Golden autumn colours and fewer crowds.
- December to March: Cold and snowy. Perfect for skiing and snow lovers.
- April: Spring blooms, including wild tulips in some regions, though mountains can still be chilly.
Almaty Tourist Places
1. Kok Tobe Hill
A hilltop viewpoint reached by cable car from the city. It offers a wide view over Almaty with the mountains behind, plus cafes, small rides and a well-known Beatles monument.
- Best for: First-timers, families, couples
- Time needed: 2 to 3 hours
- Our tip: Go in the late afternoon and stay for the city lights. Queues for the cable car can be long on weekends.
2. Medeu Ice Skating Rink
Tucked into a mountain valley, Medeu is one of the world’s highest outdoor speed-skating rinks. In winter, visitors can skate with snowy peaks all around. In other seasons, it is still a scenic gateway to the mountains.
- Best for: Families, couples, winter travellers
- Time needed: 2 to 3 hours
- Our tip: Check whether the rink is open on the day, as it depends on the season. Wear warm layers and shoes with good grip.
3. Shymbulak Ski Resort
Reached by gondola from Medeu, Shymbulak is Almaty’s main ski resort, with slopes for beginners and experienced skiers. The ski season usually runs from late November to April. In summer, the cable cars carry hikers and sightseers to mountain viewpoints.
- Best for: Families, couples, adventure seekers
- Time needed: Half to full day
- Our tip: Altitude can affect some travellers, so seniors and anyone with heart or breathing concerns should go slowly. Rent gear on site and book lessons ahead.
4. Panfilov Park and Zenkov Cathedral
A colourful wooden cathedral stands at the centre of this park, famously built without nails. Nearby is a memorial with an eternal flame, and paths lined with trees make it a calm place to walk.
- Best for: Culture lovers, seniors, families
- Time needed: 1.5 to 2 hours
- Our tip: Dress modestly if we plan to step inside the cathedral. Morning visits are quieter.
5. Green Bazaar
Almaty’s famous market is full of dried fruits, nuts, honey, spices and local sweets. It is one of the best places to feel everyday city life.
- Best for: Shoppers, food lovers, families
- Time needed: 1.5 to 2 hours
- Our tip: Watch pockets in crowds. Vegetarians should confirm what is in prepared food stalls, as meat features in many local dishes.
6. Arbat (Zhibek Zholy Pedestrian Street)
A lively pedestrian street with cafes, souvenir shops, street artists and evening music. It is a relaxed place to unwind after sightseeing.
- Best for: Friends, couples, evening walks
- Time needed: 1.5 to 2 hours
- Our tip: Visit around sunset, and try a local tea house for a break.
Almaty Surroundings: Lakes and Canyons

7. Big Almaty Lake
A glowing turquoise lake high in the mountains above the city, its colour changing through the seasons. Swimming is generally not allowed, since the lake supplies drinking water, but the views alone are worth the drive.
- Best for: Couples, families, photographers
- Time needed: Half day
- Our tip: Weather changes quickly at altitude, so carry a jacket. Check road and access conditions before going.
8. Charyn Canyon
About a four-hour drive east of Almaty, Charyn Canyon is a long red-rock canyon often compared to a smaller cousin of famous canyons elsewhere. The “Valley of Castles” section has wind-carved rock formations, and a walk down leads to the Charyn River.
- Best for: Adventure seekers, photographers, friends
- Time needed: Full day
- Our tip: Summer heat in the canyon can be strong, so carry water and a hat. Spring and autumn are comfortable.
9. Kolsai Lakes
A chain of three alpine lakes in the Tian Shan mountains, surrounded by spruce forests. Hiking between the lakes is the highlight, with calm water and fresh mountain air.
- Best for: Adventure seekers, couples, nature lovers
- Time needed: 1 to 2 days
- Our tip: The region sits near a border zone, so carry passports and let the operator arrange any required permits. Plan an overnight stay.
10. Kaindy Lake
A lake formed after a landslide long ago, with the trunks of drowned spruce trees still standing in its turquoise water. It looks otherworldly, especially in calm morning light.
- Best for: Photographers, adventure seekers, nature lovers
- Time needed: 2 to 3 hours
- Our tip: The water is icy cold, so it is for looking, not swimming. The access road can be rough, so travel with a 4×4 or experienced driver.
11. Issyk Lake Kazakhstan
A calm mountain lake in a forested gorge east of Almaty, rebuilt after earlier damage from a mudflow. It is quieter than some of the bigger-name lakes and nice for a half-day escape.
- Best for: Families, seniors, couples
- Time needed: Half day
- Our tip: Combine it with a nearby stop on the same route. Weather can shift quickly, so carry a rain jacket.
12. Alma-Arasan Gorge
Close to Almaty in the Ile-Alatau mountains, this gorge has forest trails, streams and small waterfalls. It is a gentle nature stop that does not need a full day.
- Best for: Families, seniors, easy hikers
- Time needed: 3 to 4 hours
- Our tip: Wear comfortable shoes and carry water. It is a nice add-on when time is short.
Astana Tourist Places

13. Baiterek Tower
A modern landmark designed as a “tree of life,” with an observation deck offering city views. It is the symbol of Astana’s skyline.
- Best for: First-timers, families, photographers
- Time needed: 1 to 1.5 hours
- Our tip: Visit around sunset for soft light, and check ticket timings in advance.
14. Khan Shatyr
A giant tent-shaped building that holds shops, restaurants, entertainment and even an indoor beach area. It is a lifesaver when winter outside is very cold.
- Best for: Families, shoppers, winter travellers
- Time needed: 2 to 4 hours
- Our tip: Winters in Astana can be extremely cold, so pack serious layers if visiting between December and February.
15. Hazrat Sultan Mosque
One of Central Asia’s largest mosques, with white domes, tall minarets and a grand interior. It is calm and elegant, and open to respectful visitors outside prayer times.
- Best for: Culture lovers, photographers, seniors
- Time needed: 1 to 1.5 hours
- Our tip: Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and follow guidance about prayer times.
Beyond Almaty and Astana
16. Turkistan Kazakhstan
Home to the 14th-century Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, a UNESCO-listed Sufi shrine with turquoise domes and detailed tilework. It is the spiritual heart of the country and an important pilgrimage site.
- Best for: Culture lovers, history enthusiasts, seniors
- Time needed: 1 to 2 days
- Our tip: It is far from Almaty, so plan a flight or train and avoid the peak summer heat.
17. Burabay National Park
Often called a Switzerland of Kazakhstan, Burabay has clear lakes, pine forests and granite rock formations, roughly three hours from Astana. It is popular for walks, boat rides and quiet stays.
- Best for: Couples, families, nature lovers
- Time needed: 1 to 2 days
- Our tip: Summer is the best season. Book lakeside stays early for July and August.
18. Mangystau Kazakhstan
A remote region on the Caspian coast known for chalk cliffs, strange rock formations and the underground Beket-Ata mosque. The landscapes are some of the most dramatic in Central Asia.
- Best for: Adventure seekers, photographers, second-time visitors
- Time needed: 3 to 4 days
- Our tip: Roads are rough and distances are long, so go with an experienced operator and a 4×4. Spring and autumn are comfortable.
19. Altyn Emel Singing Dune
A giant sand dune in Altyn Emel National Park that hums when sand slides down its slope. The park also has colourful hills and quiet desert scenery.
- Best for: Adventure seekers, photographers, families with older kids
- Time needed: Full day or overnight
- Our tip: Carry plenty of water and sun protection, as shade is limited. It pairs well with Charyn Canyon on a longer road trip.
20. Lake Alakol
A large lake in the east of Kazakhstan, popular for summer beach holidays and for the mineral-rich water that locals believe has health benefits. It feels very different from the mountains.
- Best for: Families, relaxation seekers
- Time needed: 2 to 3 days
- Our tip: Best from July to August. Facilities are simpler than in big cities, so set expectations.
21. Aksu-Zhabagly Nature Reserve
One of Central Asia’s oldest nature reserves, with mountain canyons, wildlife and wild tulips that bloom in spring. It is quiet, wild and ideal for nature lovers.
- Best for: Nature lovers, hikers, photographers
- Time needed: 1 to 2 days
- Our tip: Visit in April to May for flowers. Permits and local guides are usually needed, so book through an operator.
