Top 21 Best Places to Visit in Indonesia for an Unforgettable Holiday

Bali, Indonesia – Island of Gods1

One evening, a couple from Pitampura came into our office with a screenshot of a Bali swing photo. “We want this,” the wife said, laughing. Then her husband added, “But we also want a volcano, a temple and a quiet beach. Is that too much for one trip?”

It is not, and that is the magic of Indonesia. This country stretches across more than 17,000 islands, and each one feels like a different holiday. Bali is the favourite for good reason, but it is only the beginning. This Indonesia travel guide covers the top 21 tourist places in Indonesia, grouped by region, with practical notes on timing, crowds and common first-timer mistakes, so we can plan with confidence.

Why Indonesia Is on More of Our Wishlists

Bali welcomed about 6.95 million foreign visitors last year, a rise of nearly 10 per cent. Australia led with roughly 1.63 million arrivals, and India came second with about 569,000. In the first half of this year, Bali recorded 3.2 million foreign arrivals, slightly lower than the same period last year. India still ranked among the top three, with about 278,000 visitors.

What does this mean for us? Indian travellers are now a core market for Bali, so direct flights, Indian-friendly restaurants and tour operators who understand our preferences are easier to find. It also means popular spots get busy, so planning ahead matters.

Indonesia Visa and Entry Rules for Indians

Indian passport holders need a visa for Indonesia, with no visa-free entry. Most of us use a Visa on Arrival or an electronic Visa on Arrival, which allows 30 days and can be extended once. Three things are needed before we land:

  • Visa: Visa on Arrival or e-VOA. The fee is around IDR 500,000.
  • All Indonesia Arrival Card: A free online form, to be completed within 72 hours before arrival.
  • Bali Tourist Levy: IDR 150,000 per person, roughly Rs. 800 to Rs. 885, for travellers entering Bali. It is separate from the visa fee.

Rules and fees change, so we re-check them for every booking. Our visa requirements page is a good starting point.

Best Time to Visit Indonesia

  • April to October: Dry season, ideal for Bali, Komodo, Bromo and Java.
  • November to March: Wet season with showers. Mount Rinjani trekking is usually closed for part of this period.
  • October to April: The best window for Raja Ampat diving.
